This is Copper
(July 2026)
This hunting dog of the breed Kelb Tal Kacca (a Maltese hunting dog, which is also considered the national dog of Malta) became seven years old in April. He was handed over by its owner some time ago to our animal shelter in Calvià. The owner had adopted him in Malta at the time and then, after the private circumstances had changed massively, he lived with Copper on a boat. This was simply impossible for a dog of this breed and simply made the dog unhappy; this is probably out of the question – and so he asked us for help and takeover.
Copper is an incredibly great male who really behaves absolutely friendly towards every person. Most dogs don’t seem to be a problem for him and he actually avoids cats (which we didn’t necessarily expect at the beginning with this breed). Despite everything, you have to know that Copper definitely has a strong hunting instinct – and apparently especially in relation to birds. That will be probably permanently the case, so walking him outside without a leash is probably not possible.
Therefore, we wish for this great guy a family that is already experienced with dogs, which lives close to nature and with a well-fenced garden. Because this dog absolutely needs the opportunity to be able to move freely and intensively. Copper is very agile, manoeuvrable and fast. It would be important to offer him perhaps other options in relation to his hunting instinct – such as tracking or other common activities. By the way, he loves water and, for example, also our dog pool on the playground.
Copper is already neutered, fully vaccinated and tested negative for leishmaniasis and he can be met here on the island at any time by arrangement.
